ABOUT
Hi, I’m Laurel.
Welcome to my writing studio. Let me share a little about myself and my writing life. I got my start in Journalism and Public Relations. I wrote for newspapers, magazines, online news publications, and handled promotion for corporations, nonprofits and individuals. After I started a family, I was inspired to turn the lens of my writing on myself through personal essays, short fiction and narrative nonfiction. Further drawing on my background as an independent historian, I paired my love of history and genealogy with my passion for helping others explore their interest in the craft of writing.
Along the way, I created a nonprofit writing group and a coaching business. I work with emerging writers as well as those already published. To date, my youngest client is 8 and my oldest is 86! I believe firmly that you can take up writing at any point of your life, if you have curiosity, belief in yourself and an open mind.
I have a Master’s degree in Journalism and Communication and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Political Science. I also hold a certification in American Genealogical Studies and historical research.
Themes of history, renewal, growth, and the beauty of the natural world are visual features of my website and grounded in my professional approach with my clients and my own writing.
My Work
I am featured in four anthology collections ranging from topics of parenting, to procrastinating, to a vacation gone wrong, and friendship during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the base of all my work is my love for telling an impactful story to invoke thought and offer a fresh angle on time-honored ideas.
